Creative Halloween Costume Ideas

Homemade Venus Flytrap Costume
Homemade Venus Flytrap Costume
I made this Venus Flytrap costume for my 7 year old son. He has his own live Venus fly trap plant and that gave him the idea for his Halloween costume.

I started with 2 rectangles of 2" thick foam and cut them into the shape of a Venus flytrap with a neck slot on one. Then I cut pieces of green material (with an extra inch on each to allow for the thickness of foam)and pinned them together. Then I cut about 40 yellow teeth shapes and stuffed them with pipe cleaners. I pinned the teeth facing into the middle of the pieces of green material; after I had sewn them together, I simply inverted it and the teeth were now on the outside and the pipe cleaners were securely sewn inside. I then slipped each foam piece into the green material and bent the teeth accordingly.

The top part of the head piece had a longer extra piece of material down the back onto which Velcro pieces were sewn. This Velcro attached to the back of the lower piece of the head. I also attached snaps on either side to close the "mouth" a bit more. Finally I glued plastic flies inside the mouth.

For the body, I braided strips of green material to look like vines and cut out leaves; I then attached them (by sewing) to a green sweatshirt. To finish off the costume, my son wore green gloves, green pants, and a "camo" slip on runners.

I started out making my grandson a fly by just using a black furry coat vest and sewing on the front and the back a shell like a turtle and attaching black wings covered with multi-colored saran wrap. I sewed a black cone on the back so that it looked like a flies' body.

My daughter wanted to be a Venus Flytrap for Halloween this year. This costume can be hard to find in stores.

We made her Homemade Venus Flytrap Halloween Costume out of crafting foam used for cushions. We made a round pot that would allow her to walk around without being too constricting, and hot-glued some fake vines along the "pot" edge. The pot was spray-painted brown. A simple shift was sewed together and glued into the pot; a few fake leaves were also glued all over the shift.

Her hands were made into baby flytraps by gluing foam pieces to gardening gloves and then overlaying them with felt to disguise the gloves. We spray-painted the foam green color on the outside and used red spray paint in the "mouth" of the flytrap. Water bottles were cut up and glued to the "mouths" and painted a light pink to resemble teeth! The head piece was constructed the same way; green and red spray paint and water-bottle teeth. It was glued at the corners for a slip over head. We did have to use Velcro under her neck to stop the Flytrap from closing up on her when she walked. And she wore brown pants and brown shoes for her "roots".

The only thing we were not sure about was how to transform her face into a "fly" that has been
trapped. However, in the end, she decided to tint her face green and pretend it was a Man-Eating Venus Flytrap! Happy Haunting!

White Wireless Router Clipart

Continuing with our sub-theme of wireless router clipart pics, today I bring you this white wireless router clip art image. This one, to my eyes, is too bland to use in its current form. When I first saw it I didn`t even notice what it is because it lacks detail. Only the antennas were a giveaway of the mystery item`s identity. But lately I`ve been preferring simple images because they are easier to customize or to create new images from. The only element of the image that might be hard to incorporate into an adapted image is the transmission waves eminating from the antennae. But those can be easily deleted and redrawn in an adapted image.

Ziggy Creator Tom Wilson Sr., R.I.P.

From The Associated Press --

Tom Wilson Sr., the creator of the hard-luck comic strip character Ziggy, has died, his family said Monday. He was 80.

Tom Wilson Jr., who took over the comic in 1987, said his father died Friday of pneumonia at a Cincinnati hospital. The elder Wilson had moved from Cleveland to a Cincinnati nursing home about eight years ago to be near his family, his son said.

Wilson was an artist at American Greetings card company in Cleveland for more than 35 years and first published Ziggy in a 1969 cartoon collection, "When You're Not Around."

Ziggy was launched in 15 newspapers in 1971 and now appears in more than 500 daily and Sunday newspapers. It also has appeared in books, calendars and greeting cards.

Tom Wilson Jr. said the name Ziggy derived from his father's school experience of being the last alphabetically. When a new classmate arrived with a last name beginning with "Z," the idea took root with the friendly sounding "y'' ending, such as Billy or Tommy.

"Ziggy is a last-in-line character," the son said in a phone interview. "The last picked for everything and kind of a lovable kind of loser character."

"I had a 'y' at the end and 'z' at the beginning, so the word Ziggy just fell into place. That became his name," was the way Tom Wilson Sr. described it, according to his son.

Tom Wilson Jr. said his father was always optimistic.

"He was a passionate and charismatic man, it came out in everything he did," he said. "He loved ideas and he loved creating — that was really what drove him. He wasn't a loser in that sense because his passion just came out and inspired everyone around him."

Wilson was "a visionary cartoonist," said John McMeel, chairman and president of Andrews McMeel Universal, which owns Universal Uclick, formerly known as Universal Press Syndicate.

"Tom leaves behind a wonderful legacy in Ziggy, a hard-luck comics page hero who serves as a reflection of Tom's endearing wit and optimism in the face of adversity," he said in a statement.

Ziggy also starred in the ABC Christmas special, "Ziggy's Gift," which won a 1983 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program and was re-released on DVD in 2005.

Universal Uclick, which syndicated the Ziggy column, said Wilson also was head of a creative team that developed the Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears character licensing.

"Tom Wilson had a unique gift for producing creations that stirred imaginations and touched people's lives," said Hugh Andrews, chief executive officer and president of Andrews McMeel Publishing.

Besides his son, Wilson is survived by his wife, Carol, and daughters Ava and Julie.

Funeral services will be private.

PS22 Chorus of 2012 Debuts "Theme Drickilous"

After hearing through the grapevine that Ricki Lake was a huge PS22 Chorus fan, we decided to show her some support in turn on her latest endeavor as a Dancing With The Stars contestant! Her DWTS dance partner, Derek Hough, had started a theme song for their team, which Ricki tweeted last week, and at Friday's rehearsal, we decided to give them some help and finish it up for them.

So here it is, the long-awaited debut of the brand new PS22 Chorus of 2012 with its debut performance of the year, which we dedicate of course to Derek and Ricki, aka Team Drickilous! Pretty confident you'll agree that the new crew has personality and enthusiasm beyond the likes of which we've EVER seen before! And soloist Kevin shows he has only improved with age since winning our school's American Idol competition back in 2008, when he was only in first grade!

Definitely a fun way to start off the year...

UPDATE: Thrilled to see that both Ricki and Derek tweeted (and retweeted respectively) some great responses to the 2012 kids' video debut!! We really appreciate them taking the time to send their love and gratitude on what we're sure must be an incredibly busy day for them with Dancing With The Stars debuting tonight! Check out the tweets below!

Hotel For 'The Dead People' Open In Japan

A Tokyo non-profit has opened a storage facility for corpses awaiting funerals. It's billed as a "business hotel for the dead." The LISS Center Shin-Kiba facility, which is run by funeral-arranging non-profit LISS System, can store up to 37 bodies in rooms with antibacterial lights, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Monday. The rooms cost $88 per night and the center also offers assistance with arranging for morticians and setting up funerals.

"Bereaved families usually are rushed to decide on a mortician and often have problems later regarding the funeral," said Nyokai Matsushima of LISS System. "We want the families to have time to think, so they can decide on a satisfactory ceremony while their deceased relatives have a place to rest (temporarily) at our 'business hotel.'"

Concept bike - Aprilia Easyrider Motorbike by Roberto Vernile

Concept bike: Aprilia Easyrider Motorbike concept by Roberto Vernile
Looks like a dream bike to you? Well, probably the possession of such a bike is a dream for many bike lovers across the world. But that was a thing of past. Now you can own this beauty in reality. Here is a bike based on the Easy rider Concept which has been designed by Roberto Vernile in collaboration with Aprilia.

This bike has everything you always desired to have in your bike and the most unique feature it provides you with is the concept of total personalization. This concept allows you to move the seat, handlebars and the foot pegs, as the chassis is adjustable according to your specific requirements. The frame of this bike is made of Trellis (a lattice of light wooden or metal parts)and the various parts are linked to each other by modular connections.

The rider has also an option of choosing his posture while driving. He can either choose a posture as that of a racer (that is a position in which the rider bends down) or may choose to drive with an upright posture as seen in bikes usually. This convenience in making choices is greatly featured by the special seat which is made of Technogel. A major problem with today’s bikes is the storage space associated with them. A bike lover may have to compromise with the look of the bike in order to have adequate storage space.

But this issue is dealt with effectively and efficiently in this Easyrider concept by providing you enough space for helmet, navigation system or airbox. For sports riding, you have the option of replacing the front (made of perspex) with a smaller windshield. There are three brake pads available for usage without any difficulty of replacement by any tools. This wonderful project is believed to have a powerful 1200cc twin engine so that you can zoom around on the roads for longer distances at thrilling speeds.

This bike is meant for those people who are in need for a perfect combination of power, speed, durability and convenience in riding in addition to stunning looks and design. The customization of the bike is the most important feature that will attract many bike lovers because they will have options to choose from, based on their requirements. Ride hard, but safe!
